Think before you drink shark’s fin soup

Sharks are predators at the top of the food chain and are very important to the rest of  marine  life. But, with so much demand for shark products, such as fins for  soup,   the shark population is declining  rapidly. Many species of sharks are already nearing extinction.

Removing sharks from our oceans will threaten the delicate balance of our global ocean ecosystem.
I think the worst part    is  harvesting shark fins. Not only are we threatening the ocean’s supply chain, we are treating the sharks in a very cruel way.

When  a shark is caught, its fins are removed and it is thrown back into the sea  while still alive. Unable to swim, it  sinks to the sea bed and  slowly bleeds to death.
I have decided  to boycott shark’s fin soup. I hope  readers can help me spread the word. Please tell your friends and family about the plight of sharks.

Sharks in my childhood are scaring monsters in movies. They seemed to have schemed on human beings for their feast.
Now, I found that the picture is just the opposite. What a shame! We can’t deny that, from the perspective of ecologist, human beings are killing machines on this planet.
Recently, the SCMP has reported the issue again. It seems that the tradition of shark fin consumption is unstoppable. Can someone raise some good ideas?

    Dear Yau Lok-yan,

I want to thank you for telling us or else we will be killing more sharks. A lot of people in the world like to drink shark fin soup, they not only like the taste of soup, but also want to show off their living standard. Shark fin is tasteless, people should eat others food instead of shark fin. For example, people can buy the shark fin that made by vegetable. It is so fierce to cut the shark fin, then throw it back to the sea.

We should stop drinking shark fin soup because in the sea there is less shark left. I’ve also decided to boycott shark’s fin soup and I will persuade my family and friends to save the shark.

We are happy when we can drink sharks’ fin soup. It is very expensive. However, before we drink it , do we think of the sharks? Shanks are animals. Although they are more stupid than human, they do have feelings! Why we humans are so selfish? Sharks haven’t done anything wrong. Why should they be treated like that?

Thank you for your letter, Lok-yan. Shark’s fin soup used to be a dish reserved for very wealthy people. It has a long cultural heritage, but it was okay to eat it long ago because so few people did. The methods of catching sharks were less efficient, now they are industrial.

People think sharks are like stock fish in their reproduction methods. But few of them are. They take a long time to reach maturity and may only have one or two pups a year. If we continue this wholesale slaughter, we will pay the price as our reefs and our stock fish die.

There is no reason whatsoever to consume shark’s fin. It has no nutritional or medicinal benefits and does not even have its own taste. The seas are already under pressure from over-fishing. Let’s not compound the issue by being greedy.
