Mainland kidnappings a worry

December 16, 2009

By Leung Hiu-yin, Fung Kai Liu Man Shek Tong Secondary School

The problem of child kidnappings on the mainland is becoming very serious. The abducted children come from different backgrounds and there are many reasons for this terrible crime.

Mainland families can have only one child and most would prefer to have a boy to continue the family lineage. The majority of children being kidnapped are boys so they can be sold to families without a male heir.

Also, the widening wealth gap on the mainland creates bitter feelings among the poor, leading to crimes such as kidnapping. Some criminals kidnap children from rich families and demand a huge ransom.

China is a rising world power, but if it wants to be even stronger, it needs to balance development with social responsibility and respect for law and order.

If not, rapid economic progress would be accompanied by social instability.

Thank you for your letter, Hiu-yin. The terrible spate of kidnappings has been on everyone’s mind. What’s worse is that the authorities did not alert the public when they noticed the trend.

If they had, people could have been more aware, and taken precautions to safeguard their children. This shows the need for a free and independent press on the mainland where journalists are able to gain information and report issues as they happen.
