The mystery of the acid attacks

December 17, 2009

By Him Chan

Another incident of someone throwing a plastic bottle of corrosive fluid into a crowd took place again in Causeway Bay on Saturday. At least six people were injured. Police say they are still investigating the case and the government has responded by saying it will set up camera surveillance to prevent such incidents happening again.

I can only describe this action as evil. I cannot unerstand why someone would do such a thing. Maybe they hate people on the streets or they hate the streets. Maybe they are trying to release negativity inside them. I simply canot imagine someone so cruel.

The incident and other similar ones are a complete mystery. I hope police can get to the bottom of it soon and make the streets of Hong Kong safe again for pedestrians.

    The acid attacks

Recently, the acid accidents have becom the talk of the town. For me,the government have not take some useful action to investigate the cases or look for the attacker. The government spent lots of money on installing the surveillance cameras. However, these cameras are unable to record the people clearly,so they are not useful for the acid attack. We cannot arrest the attacker by using these. In fact, the viewcould not be the evidence for catching suspects. Also, the police got insufficient efficiency. They spend about nearly a year to catch the suspects.Another thing that concern me is the focus point of the government. The important thing on these cases is catching the attacker, not to just spend money and time on preventing the citizens from getting hurt.Although police arrested the attackers,I believe that the government anf police could do better in the accidient on acid attacks.

I am a usual traveler to Hong Kong, and at first i just take it lightly but now i realize the great threat it poses to people traveling around the area. But i have a strong regard this will come to a close.

Over the past year, there were at least 5 acid attacks in Causeway Bay and Mong Kok.

Lately, police and two district councils have sent more than 1000 letters to owner’s corporation and building management companies, concerned about the management over the holidays.

I think the acid attackers are crazy, and irresponsible for their acts. Also, I think relying on the police alone to prevent further acid attacker is not enough, it is also important to rely on building management to pay more attention.

For example, each building can hire a guard to look after the building gate, and prevent people without a proper purpose to go up to the building and throw the acid out. This can minimize the occurrence of the accident.

It is time to arrest the acid attackers

The acid attacks that occurred lately hurt many people walking innocently in the streets. After a few months, police still cannot find the mastermind of these terrible attacks. So much that we can fear more acid attacks will occur in crammed places.

However I believe that much can be done to prevent such attacks. The government could increase the number of policemen and their patrolling time in packed areas like Causeway Bay and Mongkok.

The government could also send some letters to the buildings’ owners with hotlines for them to call the police at once if they see any suspicious people.

What’s more, we cannot only rely on the efforts of the police. All Hong Kong citizens should be helping, giving a hand to find the culprits.

I hope the mastermind of the attackers will be arrested as soon as possible.

Thank you for your letter, Chan. Despite the acid attacks, Hong Kong remains one of the safest cities in the world. The very troubling thing about attacks like these is that they can progress to something worse.

It is also possible that the surrounding infamy in the media might encourage the perpetrator to do it again and again until they are caught. It could also make other people copy the crime and that can be very confusing for police. But with the number of security cameras around town these days, it is very unlikely that whoever is doing this had not been filmed, perhaps entering a building just before the attacks. We hope the police will solve the case soon.
