Good vibrations

January 1, 2010

China celebrated its 60th anniversary on October 1 last year. There have been some dramatic changes on the mainland over the past few decades. Most importantly, people have become richer and they have more freedom. Until the late 1970s, China was a backward country with agriculture its main industry. But things have changed, and now it is an economic and military powerhouse.

As for Hong Kong’s relationship with China, the handover has strengthened our ties with the motherland and provided a welcome boost to the city’s economy. I am sure Beijing will continue to provide its wholehearted support to Hong Kong in future.

I feel very positive about China, which has enhanced its reputation on the international stage. It has made some big improvements and I am very happy about it. I think China will become stronger, and so will Hong Kong.

Thank you for your letter, Kin-yung. It is good that you feel positive about the giant advances the mainland has made over the years. Many people in Hong Kong were very concerned about the handover.

It is good that their worries have proved to be unfounded. Let’s hope this decade will see things improve for both Hong Kong and the mainland.
