Day 1: a long way to go

December 5, 2010

By Ben Allen

Today is only day one of our trip to Antarctica and already it has been an exhausting day. All of us had to meet early in the airport at 8:30AM, only to find out that our flight had been delayed by 2 hours because of the snows that are currently covering the fields of Western Europe. Despite full knowledge that the internal flights in Argentina will only allow us 15KG of luggage, it has been an amazingly difficult challenge for all of us to keep within the weight allowance, and most of us have gone overweight by at least a few KG.

As I sit here at an Internet cafe in Charles de Gaulle airport of Paris, I can’t help but reflect on the long flight coming over from Hong Kong – with lots of turbulence and plenty of disturbances along the way. However, our respite in the airport here will only be brief, as we will board our second flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina, very soon.

Otherwise, there’s not much to report today, unless I languish over the long hours of cramped plane flights with screaming babies. Tomorrow though, there should be a lot more excitement to report back as we venture into South America and beyond!

Stay tuned!

Ben

You can bring extra luggage, provided you pay a hefty charge.
